The Meaning

Eid ul Adha, "the Festival of Sacrifice," is the holier of the two Islamic Eids. It commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to Allah's command — a supreme act of faith and devotion.

The Date

Celebrated on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It coincides with the completion of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca — one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

The Qurbani

Muslims who can afford it perform Qurbani (sacrifice) of a halal animal. The meat is divided into three equal parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for those in need.

Verses of Sacrifice

آيات الأضحى والتضحية
إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ ۝ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ ۝ إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ
"Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off."
Surah Al-Kawthar · 108:1–3
لَن يَنَالَ اللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا وَلَٰكِن يَنَالُهُ التَّقْوَىٰ مِنكُمْ
"Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you."
Surah Al-Hajj · 22:37
فَلَمَّا أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِينِ ۝ وَنَادَيْنَاهُ أَن يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ ۝ قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْيَا
"And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him: 'O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.'"
Surah As-Saffat · 37:103–105
وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِّنَ الصَّالِحِينَ ۝ وَبَارَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰ إِسْحَاقَ
"And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous. And We blessed him and Isaac."
Surah As-Saffat · 37:112–113
قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
"Say: Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds."
Surah Al-An'am · 6:162

The Story of Sacrifice

قصة الفداء العظيم
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ
— Surah As-Saffat, 37:102

The noble Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (AS) received a divine command in his dream — to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (Ishmael) (AS). Understanding this as a direct commandment from Allah, Ibrahim (AS) shared the dream with his son.

With remarkable faith and courage, Ismail (AS) replied: "O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast." As Ibrahim (AS) prepared to carry out the sacrifice, Allah, in His infinite mercy, replaced Ismail with a ram from paradise — accepting their submission.

This extraordinary act demonstrated that true faith means absolute trust in Allah's wisdom. Every year, Muslims around the world commemorate this supreme sacrifice, remembering that obedience and surrender to Allah's will is the highest virtue.

Eid Rituals & Traditions

شعائر وتقاليد العيد
Before Dawn
Ghusl & Preparation
Perform the ritual bath (ghusl), apply ittar (natural perfume), and wear the finest clothes. It is sunnah to eat nothing before Eid prayer on Eid ul Adha.
Morning
Eid Salah
Offer the special Eid prayer at the masjid or open grounds. Recite takbeer abundantly — Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha ill-Allah...
After Prayer
Qurbani (Sacrifice)
Perform the sacrificial slaughter in the name of Allah. Distribute the meat among family, neighbours, and the less fortunate — spreading joy and nourishment.
Throughout the Day
Celebration & Giving
Visit family and friends, exchange heartfelt greetings, share meals and gifts, and remember those in need with acts of charity and generosity.

اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Allahumma taqabbal minna innaka antas-Sami'ul-'Aleem
"O Allah, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنَّا وَمِنكُم
Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum
"May Allah accept from us and from you."
